Forget the Swines ...

LISD decided to close school this week because there were a couple of H1N1 cases (1 confirmed, a few unconfirmed) in an elementary down the street. With all the hoopla in the media about the silly swine flu right now, who knew I'd have other things to worry about?!

Even though the school district wasn't open, my school was but didn't allow any LISD students -- or siblings of LISD students -- to attend. There was a lot of discussion between our mommies on whether we should go to school, and my mommy was convinced that I should go because she felt that the swine flu was all hyped up and overblown.

Then Sunday night rolled around and I got a low-grade fever and couldn't go to school. :( Mommy stayed home with me and took me to the doctor who diagnosed me with my very first ear infection. On Tuesday, Daddy didn't feel good either, so stayed home with me and we were pretty miserable together.

It was Tuesday that Mommy and Daddy noticed the blisters on the tip of my tongue that caused me to cry everytime I tried to eat anything. Uh-oh. Wednesday wasn't much better even though my fever was gone, and I ate pudding, jello, fruit cups, and finally baby food in a dropper because they were all soft while moping around the house. By now, we found out that there were other babies in my class and adjoining classes that had similar symptoms. My nurse gave my mom some home remedies but said there wasn't much more we can do since it was a virus.

On Thursday, I was back at school, and we had a name for what "it" was ... Hand, foot, and mouth disease; not to be confused with the bovine variety of hoof and mouth. My teachers were a bit concerned about my lack of appetite (I'm known as a good eater at school) but were glad to see me back. I went to school on Friday, too, where I had a grand time playing and Mommy and Daddy sent me to school with my own baggie of foods: pudding, fruit cups, jello, baby food, and a dropper, just in case.

By Saturday, I was pretty much all better and had a great appetite. I ate voraciously pretty much anything that was put in front of me and wanted "moh! moh! moh!" -- except pudding, fruit cups, and jello! Everyone was very relieved and happy this little episode is over.

Swine flu was a bit overblown. There were several cases of seasonal flu at our clinic at that time, which was odd since it was so late in the season.

Expect swine flu to reappear in the fall. Hopefully they will have a vaccine by then...be sure to get the shot. I heard one possibility that fewer people in the US died than in Mexico b/c the flu shot gave some immunity. But who knows?
